As an Accredited Lab of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), the OSU Seed Lab is authorized to issue ISTA certificates. This service began in June 2009.
Blue vs. Orange
Blue ISTA Certificates (BIC) are test reports for seed samples. The certificate refers only to the seed sample, not the lot. Sampling is the responsibility of the customer. We can issue these certificates on any sample, regardless of origin or lot location. There is not a maximum lot size. Make sure to click here for more information on sending in a seed sample for an ISTA Blue Certificate.
Orange ISTA Certificates (OIC)are test reports that represent the entire seed lot. To ensure that the certificate accurately represents the seed lot, the Lab is responsible for both sampling and testing. Our samplers are located in the Pacific Northwest region and California. Make sure to click here to learn how your lot can be sampled for an ISTA Orange Certificate.
Which One Do I need? It depends on what is required by the importing country/importer. Consult import requirements of the receiving country and the buyer prior to sampling. The testing rules are identical for both types of certificates.
What are Provisional, Original, Duplicate certificates?
-
Provisional certificates are issued before the completion of all requested tests (e.g. a purity result before germination is complete).
-
Original certificates are issued upon the completion of all tests.
-
Duplicates are exact copies of the Original and are identical to the Original in every way except the serial number and date issued. One Original certificate will be supplied for each sample tested; you must request Provisional and Duplicate certificates. All certificates state their status.
WHAT ARE THE Certificate FEES?
Certificate (Orange or Blue): Included in the cost of testing. Duplicate, Provisional, and revised certificates incur an additional charge. All fees can be found on the Testing Fees page.
